Clock / Time in Dreams: Meaning in Depth Psychology
Time made visible. Clocks in dreams tend to appear when some inner deadline is felt: time running out, standing still, or moving strangely. Less about the calendar than about the psyche's sense that there is something to be done, and a season to do it in.
THE CORE MEANING
The ego's awareness of mortality, process, and sequence. Time in dreams often operates differently than waking time: compressed, reversed, frozen. The clock is a mandala (circular) with a direction (forward). Time anxiety in dreams often reflects individuation urgency, the psyche's sense that there is work to be done.
VARIATIONS: CONTEXT CHANGES THE MEANING
- clock ticking: Time pressure: something needs attention before it's too late. Individuation's urgency.
- stopped clock: Time arrested: a part of the psyche is stuck at a particular moment, often a traumatic or developmental one
- running out of time: Developmental urgency: the psyche signaling that a window for transformation is narrowing
- time going backwards: Regression, return to earlier material, circumambulation through time
