Island in Dreams: Meaning in Depth Psychology
Set apart, for better or worse. An island can be exile: cut off, surrounded by feelings too big to swim. It can also be sanctuary: a whole small world where you finally have room to be. Which one the dream means usually lives in how the water feels.

Isolation, individuality, the ego as a small piece of land surrounded by the unconscious (ocean). Also: the Self as a complete world unto itself, and the temenos, a bounded sacred space separated from the mainland of ordinary life.
VARIATIONS: CONTEXT CHANGES THE MEANING
- paradise island: The idealized Self, the fantasy of wholeness, the place where everything is perfect. May be genuine glimpse or may be inflation
- deserted island: Radical isolation: the ego cut off from all social support, forced into self-reliance. Can be terrifying or clarifying.
- approaching island: Moving toward a new state of consciousness, seeing the goal from the sea of the unconscious
